Vol. 421 No. 6

Written Answers. - Child Abuse Prevention Programme.

John V. Farrelly

Ceist:

94 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education if he intends to approve the extension of the programme for child abuse prevention, which is currently being taught in the schools in the Eastern Health Board region, to schools in the North Eastern Health Board region and the other regions throughout the country; if so, if he will outline when it will commence; if not the reason therefor; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am happy to say that I have sanctioned the secondment of teachers to allow for the national implementation of the Child Abuse Prevention Programme which will commence in September. These teachers will work with social workers from each health board to train all teachers outside the Eastern Health Board during the 1992-93 school year.

I am satisfied that this programme will prove worthwhile and beneficial to pupils and parents alike and will help teachers in this difficult area.
