Vol. 422 No. 5

Written Answers. - Community Reserve Fund.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

181 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Labour if he will outline (1) the purpose of the Community Reserve Fund made available to FÁS in 1991-1992 and (2) the amount of money allocated; and if he will give details of the way in which this money was actually utilised and the numbers of trainees trained and placed as a result.

In December 1990, the European Commission agreed to make available £2.381 million to Ireland towards the cost of 3 innovatory pilot projects aimed at assisting persons with specific difficulties who are long term unemployed or in danger of becoming long term unemployed reenter the workforce. The projects are located in Dublin Inner City, Tallaght and Cork North City. The total cost of the projects is £3.174 million.

The projects consist of an interview programme, followed by various options of:

— FÁS Specific Skills Training

— FÁS special feeder training courses

— Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme and literacy courses

— CERT Specific Skills courses

— Third level education courses

— Company based training

To date £1.4 million has been spent.

To end of May 1992 3,623 unemployed have been called for interview and 1,964 have attended. Of these, about 450 people have been placed in training and education programmes organised by FÁS, vocational education committees and CERT. Approximately 50 people who have completed such programmes have been placed in employment.
The projects are ongoing and it is envisaged that they will continue into 1993.
