Vol. 422 No. 5

Written Answers. - Advisory Service.

Emmet Stagg

Ceist:

35 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the proposals from Teagasc for a free advisory service to small farmers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Teagasc authority is at present considering proposals for the restructuring of the advisory service. Pending receipt of the Authority's decisions I am not in a position to comment on the details of any proposed revisions to the service.

An additional sum of £1 million was provided for Teagasc in the 1992 Budget to enable it to provide additional advisory services to developmental and smaller scale farmers who have financial viability problems. This provision enabled Teagasc to launch the Small Farm Development Programme on 5 June 1992. About 50 advisers will be deployed to this programme which should help the viability of up to 7,000 farm families. Ultimately it is hoped that up to 14,000 farm families will benefit under the programme.
