Vol. 422 No. 5

Written Answers. - Decentralisation Programme.

William Cotter

Ceist:

74 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Finance if he will locate a motor registration office in County Monaghan in view of the fact that the county has not benefited from the decentralisation programme and that existing offices are available; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy may be aware, the current excise duty on motor vehicles is being replaced, with effect from 1 January 1993, by a Vehicle Registration Tax, which is to be administered by the Revenue Commissioners. The Commissioners have decided that the new tax will be administered through a headquarters, with over 30 staff situated in Wexford, supported by about 100 staff operating out of a nationwide network of Revenue offices, including an office located in Monaghan town.

With regard to the decentralisation programme, it is unfortunate that many areas, including Monaghan, have had to be disappointed to date in this programme. However, I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that the selection of centres to benefit from the programme has been most difficult given the large number of locations that merit consideration. A further extension of the decentralisation programme is unlikely for the foreseeable future, at least pending completion and review of the present programme.
