Written Answers. - Ronanstown (Dublin) Crime.

Séamus Pattison

Ceist:

92 Mr. Pattison asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline whether the problem of crime in the area covered by the Ronanstown Garda station has decreased over the last year; and if not, if he will give details of the measures, if any, he proposes the gardaí should implement to curb this continuing problem of crime in the area.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 91 and 92 together.

The particulars requested in Question No. 91 are detailed in the following below.

In regard to Question No. 92 I am informed by the Garda authorities that figures for recorded indictable crime in the Ronanstown area for 1991 and to-date in 1992 are not yet available. The indications are that the level of crime increased last year. However the Garda authorities inform me that a specific plan of action has been drawn up to deal with the crime problems experienced in the Ronanstown area. This plan involves a very strong emphasis on community relations and crime prevention and includes measures such as the GRAFT project which was established last year and is one of a number of community-based projects in which the Gardaí cooperate with the Probation and Welfare Service and statutory and non-statutory agencies in helping young people to steer clear of crime. In addition the Garda Schools Programme is in operation in all primary schools in the area.

As the following below shows the Garda strength in Ronanstown station has been increased by 10 since the beginning of this year. This includes the appointment of an Inspector to the station. There are now nine Community Gardaí operating in Ronanstown.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that their plan of action has been very effective and the preliminary and provisional indications for the first half of this year are that the level of crime in the area has decreased in comparison with the corresponding period last year.
I would also refer the Deputy to the interdepartmental group on urban crime which was established last year with the purpose of providing a wider response to urban and juvenile crime than can be provided by the Garda Síochána on its own. The group which comprises senior officials from the relevant Government Departments, agencies and the Garda Síochána is currently focussing on the needs of the Ronanstown area and its report, which is expected shortly, will include a reference to the Garda response to crime in the area.
