Vol. 423 No. 8

Written Answers. - Army Recruitment.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

88 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Defence if any recruitment to the Army will take place in 1992 if not, when he intends recruitment to commence; if any vacancies exist for specialist engineering staff; and the Government's intention on the recruitment of cadets in 1993.

The following recruitment to the Permanent Defence Force has taken place to date in 1992:

15 Army Cadets

8 Air Corps Cadets

6 Naval Service Cadets

32 Army Apprentices

30 Air Corps Appentices

4 Naval Service Apprentices

50 Naval Service Recruits

2 Medical Officers.

A competition for appointment as Aeronautical Engineer in the Air Corps will be advertised in the near future. There are three (3) vacancies at present for Aeronautical Engineers. The Corps of Engineers has seven (7) Technical Officer vacancies. There are, however, a number of officers studying engineering at University College, Galway.

The question of general recruitment to the Permanent Defence Force is kept under review in the light of operational requirements.

No decision has been taken as to the number of Cadets to be appointed in 1993.
