Vol. 424 No. 6

Written Answers. - Holiday Cottage Schemes.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

30 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications the plans, if any, she has to encourage the development of holiday cottage schemes and self-catering tourist accommodation through tax incentives or otherwise.

Following a period of rapid expansion in self catering capacity which has grown by some 25 per cent since 1987, with a 90 per cent increase in capacity in holiday cottages schemes the priority now is to further develop the market for this product particularly in the off-peak and shoulder months. As I have indicated in another reply today, Bord Fáilte will launch a special major marketing campaign next year aimed at boosting off peak tourism business. In the circumstances there are no plans to further accelerate development of new capacity in this sector through tax incentives or otherwise.
