Vol. 424 No. 6

Written Answers. - New Irish Rail Locomotives.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

40 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications whether there is a need for new locomotives for Irish Rail and if, in view of the age structure of the present stock when it is expected that the new locomotives will be available for service.

The provision of locomotives used on the rail network is a matter falling entirely within the day to day operations of Iarnród Éireann.

The Chairman of CIE has informed me that the evaluation of the tenders for the supply and delivery of ten new locomotives has recently been completed and it is expected that a contract will be placed shortly. Delivery of these new locomotives which is expected in early 1994, will significantly enhance the quality of rail services provided by Iarnród Éireann.
