Vol. 424 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Westmeath Housing Shortage.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

96 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the acute housing shortage in County Westmeath; and the proposals, if any, he has to reduce the lengthening waiting lists.

I am aware of the housing needs in County Westmeath as ascertained in the latest assessment carried out by the housing authorities at 31 March 1991 under section 9 of the Housing Act, 1988.

The capital available for the local authority housing construction programme in 1992 has been fully allocated and there are no funds available to supplement the allocations to individual authorities. Capital allocations for 1993 will be made in due course when the provisions to be made in the 1993 Public Capital Programme have been determined. The traditional means of meeting social housing needs through the provision of local authority housing has been supplemented by a comprehensive range of means under "A Plan for Social Housing" and the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1992.
