Vol. 424 No. 6

Written Answers. - Milk Price Differential.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

104 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to the price differential in milk which costs 58 pence per litre in supermarkets in this State and 33 pence per litre in supermarkets in Northern Ireland; if he will investigate the matter to establish the reason for the very substantial price differential; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The retail price of milk in this country is a commercial matter between the suppliers and the retail trade. The State does not exercise price control in this area. However, if factors are operating in the market in a manner which adversely affects consumer interests, this can be investigated by the Director of Consumer Affairs.
