Vol. 424 No. 8

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

In view of the current crisis, I wish to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the total breakdown of political and personal relationships between the two parties — Fianna Fáil and the Progressive Democrats — in Government, the reported resignation from office of two Government Ministers, the consequent political instability and the need for the Government to resign from office or to seek a vote of confidence from Dáil Éireann. In view of the importance of this matter it would be in the interest of the House generally if this debate took place today.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be contemplated under Standing Order 30 and, accordingly, I cannot grant leave to move the motion. The question of confidence in Government is of such significance that it can only be dealt with by the substantive motion to that effect.
