Most chairpersons of State bodies act on a part-time basis. General policy in relation to travel in this country on board business by such chairpersons would be to allow payment of Civil Service mileage rates in respect of journeys reasonably and necessarily undertaken.
In relation to the chief executives of these bodies, the policy is to apply the arrangements recommended in Report 30 of the Review Body on Higher Remuneration in the Public Sector. Under those arrangements the chief executive of some State bodies, mainly the commercial bodies, would be allowed private use of a company car without charge. In the case of other bodies an annual deduction, equivalent to 20 per cent of the list price of the car, would fall to be made in respect of such use from the basic rate of remuneration recommended by the Review Body. These arrangements would also apply to a full-time chairperson who would be regarded as the chief executive of the body concerned.
