Vol. 424 No. 9

Written Answers. - Transport of Animals.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

159 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when it is proposed to implement the detailed Directive on animal welfare in relation to transport within the European Community; and whether this will be in operation by 1 January 1993, for all forms of livestock.

Arrangements are in hand with a view to implementing, at the earliest possible date, the relevant provisions of Council Directive 91/628/EEC on the protection of animals during transport which are not already covered by existing national legislation.

Additional proposals are awaited from the EC Commission on the detailed applicatory rules on animal transport which, it is envisaged, will be incorporated in the proposed national rules.
