Vol. 425 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mayo National Park.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

118 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Finance the position in regard to the provision of a national park in the Nephinbeg area of County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Mayo County Council formally requested the Office of Public Works to consider the possibility of establishing an appropriate area within the county as a national park.

The present position is that, following discussions between the Office of Public Works and the County Council, it was agreed that the national park proposal might be considered in the wider context of the conservation of the natural heritage of the north west Mayo region.

This will require a broad study, which will involve widespread consultation with community/development groups, farming organisations, conservation groups and other bodies. Mayo County Council are considering the Office of Public Works' suggestions for such a study at present.
