The amount of money allocated to the National Museum under all headings in the period 1988 to 1992 is shown in the attached table.
The Director of the National Museum has calculated that 35,220 square metres of additional exhibition space would be required to enable it to put the entire collections on display. However, the Deputy will be aware that it is not the practice internationally for museums to display their collections in their entirety but, rather, to rotate such collections to ensure maximum possible public interest. I accept, however, that the National Museum does have accommodation problems.
Satisfying the accommodation requirements of the National Museum is primarily the responsibility of the Office of Public Works. The issue of acquiring extra accommodation to ensure that the optimum proportion of the National Collections can be properly displayed — with particular reference to the Kildare Street headquarters — is being addressed as a matter of urgency by an inter-departmental committee consisting of officials of my Department, the National Museum and the Office of Public Works.
I am also considering other proposals for the location of the Museum's important collections but I am not in a position to give the Deputy more precise information at this stage.
