Vol. 427 No. 2

Written Answers. - Carer's Allowance Eligibility.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

174 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health if a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 who is an old age pensioner and who looks after another person, who is not related to her, but who is blind and has had three brain tumours and is confined to a wheelchair, can be considered for a carer's allowance or for some allowance as she receives nothing other than her old age pension.

I have taken this matter up with my colleague, the Minister for Social Welfare, who is responsible for the Carer's Allowance. I understand that it is not possible for a person to qualify for the Carer's Allowance and the Non-Contributory Old Age Pension at the same time.

I have asked the Eastern Health Board to investigate whether the person concerned could be assisted in her role as carer in any other way. On receipt of their report, I will communicate directly with the Deputy.
