Vol. 427 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Meal Scheme.

Ceist:

185 Mr. Burke asked the Minister for Education if she will introduce a free school meal scheme for primary schools in view of the increase in the incidence of TB in the Southern Health Board area and the waste of resources in maintaining existing food mountains; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At present local authorities in conjunction with the Department of Social Welfare and with the approval of my Department provide meals for certain schools. This scheme is administered by the local authorities.

There is also a scheme which allows milk to be provided to pupils in schools at low cost. This scheme is subsidised by the EC.
