Vol. 427 No. 2

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to me under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case: Deputy O'Donoghue — the present position in relation to the proposed rationalisation of second-level schools in Kerry, and in particular those located in Caherciveen, Kenmare and Rathmore; Deputy D. Ahern — the present difficulties in the placement of pupils in second level education in the greater Dundalk area in the coming years: Deputy Kenneally — the decision to locate the out-fall pipe from the new sewage treatment plant in Tramore, County Waterford, at Saleens in the back strand area; Deputy Yates — the provision of suitable accommodation for staff of the Departments of Social Welfare and Finance in Wexford town and the need to provide new buildings in this regard as a matter of urgency, in view of the current industrial action which is affecting services from both offices; Deputy Owen — if the Minister for Justice will introduce amending legislation to increase the maximum sentence applicable for rape arising out of the horrendous court case where a young woman was subject to brutality and incest for 16 years; Deputy Deenihan — if the Minister for Health will make the necessary finance available to the Southern Health Board to appoint a third surgeon at Tralee General Hospital as the surgical waiting list now stands at 1,100, which is one of the highest in the country. Deputy Gilmore — the failure of the Health and Social services to detect and take appropriate action to stop systematic sexual and physical abuse of a young woman in Kilkenny over a 16 year period as highlighted in a case in the Central Criminal Court on 1 March 1993; Deputy Rabbitte — the discovery of major inaccuracies in official Government statistics which overstated the strength of the Irish economy over the past five years; Deputy Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny)— the threat to the beet quota by the proposed sale of sugar company shares to a foreign company; Deputy Mulvihill — the present crisis in the Irish Steel Company's plant in Haulbowline, Cobh, County Cork and to ask the Government to do all in its power to ensure the survival of this plant and the jobs of its 560 workforce.

I have selected for discussion the matters raised by Deputies Yates, Mulvihill and Deenihan.
