Vol. 427 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Roster System.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

94 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice the proposals, if any, she has to change the Garda Síochána roster system; if she has held consultations with the Garda Representative Association and the senior Garda authorities on the matter; the reason for any such move; the financial implications and effect on morale in the force; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The operation of the roster system in the Garda Síochána is primarily a matter for Garda management. Any proposals for change in this area would, therefore, come in the first instance from the Garda authorities who are in constant dialogue with the Garda representative bodies on all issues affecting the operation of the Force. I am confident that all members of An Garda Síochána are anxious to achieve the best possible level of service to the public at all times. I believe, also, that it is generally acknowledged at all levels of the Force that the traditional rosters do not provide the optimum service during exceptionally busy periods.

Any more detailed comment from me on the issue at this juncture would not be helpful.
