Vol. 427 No. 2

Written Answers. - Listowel (Kerry) Motor Taxation Office.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

104 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Environment if he will grant approval to Kerry County Council to provide a motor taxation office in the urban council offices in Listowel, County Kerry.

The motor tax office in Tralee is adequate to serve the needs of both motorists and staff. In the circumstances, I am not prepared to approve a second motor tax office in County Kerry. Motorists who do not wish to visit the motor tax office, or those living some distance from the office, have the option of renewing their motor tax through the free postal facility provided by my Department. A reminder notice is sent to each vehicle owner about two weeks in advance of the expiry of the existing tax disc. This notice contains pre-printed details of the vehicle, including the appropriate rate of tax, and it can be used as a tax renewal form. The form is accompanied by a post-paid envelope, addressed to the local motor tax office. I understand that about 60 per cent of motorists in County Kerry renew motor tax by post.
