Vol. 427 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cork Tunnel Construction Works.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

112 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Environment when the construction work on the River Lee tunnel will start; if all survey work is completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

All necessary survey work on the downstream crossing of the River Lee project has been completed. The contract for this project will be on a design-construct basis and a pre-qualification process to select the most suitable contractors, who will be invited to tender, is now underway. It is expected that the local authority will invite tenders from a short list of contractors around the middle of this year and that the contract will be awarded towards the end of the year. The successful tenderer will then have to complete the detailed design before construction can start. The earliest realistic date for construction to start is mid-1994.
