177 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Education when she will sanction the allocation of a remedial teacher to Butlersbridge national school, Ballyhaise national school and Castletara national school, County Cavan, all of which are prepared to share a teacher.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

178 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education if she will provide a travelling remedial teacher to cover schools in Grangecon, Stratford-on-Slaney, Bigstone and Baltinglass in County Wicklow, all of which need this facility.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 165, 171, 172, 177 and 178 together.

The Programme for a Partnership Government made a specific commitment to the appointment of 500 additional remedial teachers by September 1996.

As a first step towards honouring this commitment, I have decided to appoint an aditional 80 remedial teachers with effect from September 1993.

These posts will be allocated to individual and groups of schools on the basis of priority of need, as indicated by data collected from schools.

The needs of the schools mentioned by the Deputy will be considered in this context.
