Vol. 427 No. 7

Written Answers. - School TV Licence Fees.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

167 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education her views on whether requiring primary schools to purchase television licences out of their funding is fair and just; if she will ensure that the need for primary schools to have television licences for televisions which are used only for educational purposes is waived; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that new legislation would be necessary in order to exempt schools from the purchase of TV licences. Such legislation would be a matter for the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht.

The Deputy may be aware that I am providing for a £5 increase in the Capitation Grant to schools for 1993 to further assist schools with their day to day running costs.
