Vol. 427 No. 7

Written Answers. - New Garda Station.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

81 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice if she will proceed with the building of the new Garda Station on the Corporation Site at Murdock's Car Park, Drogheda, County Louth, the original site purchased from the Corporation of Drogheda; if other sites which had been viewed have now been eliminated; when sanction will be given for the commencement in view of the fact that architectural work and plans were completed some considerable time ago, were adjusted following consultation and, in view of the delay in proceeding with this replacement facility, if it is included in this years Estimates capital budget for building projects; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

As I said in my reply to Question No. 107 on 25 February 1993 various sites have been examined as possible locations for the proposed new District headquarters at Drogheda. The original site, purchased by the Office of Public Works for this purpose, was found to be the most suitable. Plans for the new station are being drawn up at present based on the use of this site.

Whether or not finance will be available for this project in 1993 is dependent on the progress which will be made, and consequently expenditure incurred, on projects which have already commenced. I can assure the Deputy, however, that the Drogheda project is one of very high priority and that every effort will be made to ensure that it commences this year.
