Vol. 428 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Enterprise Boards.

Michael Finucane

Ceist:

24 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if in view of the fact that SFADCo are responsible for community development projects and small industry in the Limerick, Clare, north Tipperary, north Kerry and south Offaly areas and that the objectives of the county enterprise boards are community projects and small industry he will clarify the role, if any, SFADCo will play in the country enterprise boards in those areas; if there will be separate county enterprise boards for each of those counties; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to my replies to parliamentary questions on 18 February, 1992 in connection with county enterprise boards.

I have initiated a review of the objectives, strategy, establishment procedures, etc. for county enterprise partnership boards as originally envisaged in the light of the commitment in the Programme for a Partnership Government to encouraging local initiatives. It is clear that there is widespread concern to avoid duplication and disruption where effective structures and lines of communication such as county development teams, tourism bodies, LEADER and INTERREG projects, etc. already exist within a region. It is also important that the boards will operate in an integrated and cohesive way with the national and regional agencies developing enterprise and employment, in particular, the IDA, SFADCO, Údarás na Gaeltachta and FÁS.
