There were around 2,200 people on the Community Employment Development Programme at the end of February 1993 of whom around 1,570 were recruited directly to the programme since it started in October 1992. The programme was introduced on a pilot basis with the aim of recruiting around 3,000 persons under the terms of the programme. It is likely that the target will be achieved towards the end of the year.
The operation of the programme will be evaluated to assess its effectiveness in assisting persons who are long term unemployed.
