Vol. 429 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pre-School Education.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

110 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if, in the light of the commitment in the Programme for a Partnership Government 1993 to 1997 that a proper system of pre-school education for children between the ages of two and four years in disadvantaged areas will be established, she will give details of the number of pre-school education units which will be set up, the number of children who will be catered for therein; if the children to be catered for are those other than itinerant children; and if a school (details supplied) in County Mayo will recieve the necessary subsidy from her Department to continue running a special class for disadvantaged children.

I am at present having proposals formulated within my Department regarding the implementation of the commitment contained in the Programme for a Partnership Government in relation to pre-schools.

No decision on the details requested by the Deputy has been taken at this stage.
