Vol. 429 No. 1

Written Answers. - Intoxicating Liquor Act.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

64 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice if she intends introducing legislation to change the licensing laws to allow functions be held on Saturday nights in areas where they are now prohibited and where licences cannot be obtained by hotel owners; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I take it the Deputy is referring to the provisions of section 5 of the 1927 Intoxicating Liquor Act which prohibit the granting of a special exemption order in respect of a hotel for any time on a Sunday other than a Sunday that is New Year's Day, New Year's Eve or St. Patrick's Day. As I indicated in the reply to Question No. 174 on 10 February 1993, I have no proposals at present to amend the law in this respect.
