74 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of the support and encouragement his Department gives to residents associations and local community groups to enhance and encourage a clean up in their areas; if he will introduce any new initiatives; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Wexford): My Department has in recent years provided ongoing support for clean-up activities—for example, by a media campaign organised in 1992 to support and complement efforts by local authorities and community groups. It would not in general be appropriate or practicable for the Department directly to assist individual community groups but I will continue to encourage local authorities to do so by providing practical assistance in the form of manpower and equipment and by other suitable means. I intend to contact local authorities shortly about a possible further initiative in 1993.
