Vol. 429 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Recycling Strategy.

Máirín Quill

Ceist:

82 Miss Quill asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the success of Green Spot products in Germany; and if he intends to introduce a similar campaign in this country.

Wexford): I am aware of the system developed by trade and industry in Germany in response to national legislation requiring manufacturers and/or distributors to take back packaging for re-use or recycling. I share the widely held view that measures of this kind should desirably be co-ordinated at EC level.

The recycling study entitled "Towards Recycling Study for Ireland" which was published earlier this week examines the feasibility of various possible market interventions, including take back systems. I have invited industrial, local authority, consumer and environmental interests to submit their views on the issues raised in the study. I intend to evalute all of the options in the context of preparing a national recycling strategy.
