Vol. 430 No. 5

Written Answers. - Education Grants.

Pat Cox

Ceist:

192 Mr. Cox asked the Minister for Education the grants, if any, that are available for voluntary organisations through her Department; and if she will give the section, officer, telephone number and address where further information can be obtained in respect of individual schemes.

State funding for the support of voluntary youth work is made available on an annual basis by my Department to voluntary youth organisations through the Youth Service Grant Scheme.

In addition my Department provides funding for a number of other youth activities including over 200 special projects for disadvantaged young people and a network of youth information centres.

The Youth service allocation for 1993 is £11,452,000.

In the adult education area there is no grant scheme as such for the payment of grants to voluntary organisations.

Grants-in-aid are paid annually to the following voluntary non-State organisations: Aontas — The National Association of Adult Education; Peoples College; National Adult and Literacy Agency; Dublin Institute for Adult Education; ICA; Reading Association of Ireland.
There is no scope for the expansion of the number of organisations to whom such grants-in-aid would be payable.
Further details of schemes in the areas of Youth Affairs and Adult Education are available from Mr. George Rowley, Principal Officer, Youth Affairs Section, Floor 11, Hawkins House, Hawkins Street, Dublin 2. (Telephone No. 8734700, Ext. 3502).
Under my Department's Scheme of Assistance to Sport grants are allocated to National Sporting Organisations for expenditure under the following headings:
(i) Annual Grant-Aid to assist with the costs of administration, coaching, the purchase of equipment and costs associated with special projects designed to increase participation and improve standards.
(ii) Grant-Aid to assist with costs associated with attending/hosting of major international competition, training and competition costs of sports persons and sports exchanges with other European Countries.
(iii) Grant-Aid towards the preparation and sending of Irish teams to the Olympic Games.
(iv) Grants, as funds permit, for the provision of recreational facilities.
Further details of the schemes in the area of Sport can be obtained from Mr. Con Haugh, Principal Officer, Sport Section, Floor 11, Hawkins House, Hawkins Street, Dublin 2. Telephone: 8734700, Extension 3501.
