Vol. 430 No. 5

Written Answers. - Supervision on School Transport.

John Browne

Ceist:

215 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Education if her Special Education Review Committee has made any suggestions to provide supervision on buses for children attending special schools for mentally handicapped such as St. Lazerians School, Carlow; and, if not, if she will give her views on the safety of these special children on their way to school.

In my response to the Deputy on 23 March 1993 I outlined the present level of support provided by my Department in relation to escorts for handicapped children while travelling.

I also indicated that the Special Education Review Committee was examining the range of support service available to children with disabilities.

I expect to have the Committee's report fairly shortly and will be considering what further measures are appropriate in the light of the committee's recommendations.
