Vol. 430 No. 5

Written Answers. - Shannon Navigation Project.

John Connor

Ceist:

19 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement confirming that the Office of Public Works will carry out works to extend the Shannon navigation from Drum Bridge to Abbey Town, Boyle, County Roscommon; and if the project will involve deepening and canalisation of the relevant stretch of the Boyle River or the provision of a new channel.

The Commissioners of Public Works are planning an extension of the Shannon Navigation which will bring the navigation closer to and make the town more accessible to boating traffic. A new canal will have to be constructed and this will involve the acquisition of adjacent lands. This canal will run parallel to and close by the Boyle River and will pass under the new Curlews bypass bridge. Some initial survey and investigation work has already been done but it will be some time before all the preparatory work has been completed.
