Vol. 430 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dungarvan (Waterford) Castle.

Jim Mitchell

Ceist:

22 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance when it is proposed to complete work on Dungarvan Castle, County Waterford, so that it can be opened to the general public for viewing as a national monument.

A major scheme of conservation and partial restoration works is required before Dungarvan Castle can be fully opened to the public.

It is planned to include this work in the next phase of the EC Structural Funds and it is hoped to commence work in 1994. The first step of the project will be an archaeological excavation and this will be followed by a five year programme of conservation and restoration works. It is planned that parts of the castle will be opened to the public on a phased basis over the period of the works.
