Vol. 430 No. 5

Written Answers. - North Dublin Garda Strength.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

138 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the continuing problems of vandalism and car deathriding in the Priorswood area of north Dublin, she will increase the number of Gardaí and other resources at Coolock Garda Station, Dublin 5.

The Garda authorities have informed me that they are aware of problems of vandalism and so-called "joyriding" in the Priorswood area and that they have taken and are taking appropriate measures to deal with these problems.

On 11 Februry 1933 a meeting of all interested parties was called by the local Superintendent. The meeting which was very well attended was positive, enthusiastic and fruitful. As a result of the meeting a Resident's Association was established which has led to greater co-operation and liaison between the residents and the gardaí and this involvement by the Community in tackling the problem has resulted in a decrease in unauthorised takings and criminal activity in general in the area.

The present strength at Coolock station is 98 as compared to 96 at the end of last year. I am informed by the Garda authorities that the local officers are satisfied that the level of resources available to them at present are adequate to meet the policing needs of the area. They will, however, continue to monitor the sitution and take whatever measures are appropriate to prevent and detect the type of crime mentioned in the question.
