Vol. 430 No. 8

Written Answers. - Ballinasloe (Galway) Water Scheme.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

166 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of the present position of the proposed group water scheme at Cappataggle, Ballinasloe, County Galway; if he has satisfied himself that the water source is adequate as regards both quality and quantity; if he will make funds available for the scheme in 1993; if such funds will be provided from own resources or from EC Cohesion or Structural Funds; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The proposed source is considered satisfactory with regard to the quality and quantity of supply. The scheme was redesigned and expanded, at the suggestion of Galway County Council, in order to integrate the reservoir and distribution system more fully with the Council's planned water supply network for the area. As a result, group scheme grants and contributions from group members are unlikely to suffice to finance this scheme which, in consequence, would require a substantial contribution from the provision for public water and sanitary services schemes. Having regard to the overall demand on that provision, I cannot say when it may be possible to approve this scheme. Group water schemes do not qualify for any EC funding at present. The question of their eligibility for future EC funding is being pursued.
