Vol. 430 No. 8

Written Answers. - Booterstown (Dublin) Lands.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

177 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment the amount paid to date for a road reservation on St. Helens lands, Booterstown, County Dublin; to whom this money has been paid; the amounts still to be paid; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Dún Laoghaire Borough Council has now deleted this road reservation from its development plan; and if he will now permit Dún Laoghaire Corporation to use the reservation for some other purpose, perhaps public housing.

The lands at St. Helen's, Booterstown were purchased by Dún Laoghaire Corporation to facilitate a road link from Stillorgan Road to a Merrion Gates By-Pass as part of the the then proposed Eastern By-Pass. Grants totalling £2,503,250 have been paid to date by my Department to the Corporation in respect of this purchase and further instalments totalling £1,897,500 are still due. I understand that payments by the Corporation were made in favour of Messrs. Berland (Limited).

As the lands concerned are surplus to road development requirements following the decision not to proceed with the Eastern By-Pass, my Department has requested Dún Laoghaire Corporation to arrange for their disposal and to repay the proceeds to my Department. It is a matter in the first instance for the Corporation to consider possibilities in relation to disposal, including possible alternative uses of the land.
