Vol. 430 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tullamore (Offaly) Office Closure.

Charles Flanagan

Ceist:

106 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement on the closure of the Office of Public Works at Church Street, Tullamore, County Offaly and the transfer of the workforce to Mullingar, County Westmeath, and the steps, if any, he proposes to take to make good the loss of this office to the town of Tullamore.

It has been decided in the interests of economy and efficiency to amalgamate the operational headquarters for the maintenance of the Brosna and Inny Catchment drainage schemes in the latter's existing premises in Mullingar, resulting in the closure of the Brosna Depot in Tullamore. No change is proposed in the number of personnel employed on the Brosna scheme which has, in any event, been serviced in part from Mullingar for a number of years.

I am satisfied that the loss if any to the town of Tullamore, arising from this decision will not be significant and is likely to be more than offset by an increasing level of activity at the much larger Canals Depot which, of course is being retained in the town.
