Vol. 430 No. 8

Written Answers. - Legal Costs.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

135 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice if she has received a request from a person (details supplied) in Dublin for assistance towards the payment of legal costs arising from a trial in the Special Criminal Court in which the person concerned was acquitted of all charges.

A request for assistance towards payment of the legal costs in question was made by the wife of the person concerned to my predecessor in 1991. It was explained to her in letters dated 3 May, 1991 and 24 October, 1991 that there is no provision for assisting with the payment of legal costs incurred outside the statutory criminal legal aid scheme. The person concerned declined to apply for legal aid under that scheme.
