Vol. 431 No. 2

Written Answers. - River Barrow Salmon Stocks.

Charles Flanagan

Ceist:

45 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the absence of salmon from the River Barrow; and the steps, if any, he proposes to take to address the problem.

I am aware of the problems being experienced with salmon stocks in the River Barrow. Indeed I recently met a deputation from the locality and from the neighbouring River Nore and they explained the problems in detail. These problems are however not unique to the Borrow but have been experienced worldwide and to date no conclusive evidence has been proferred identifying the exact cause of the decline in salmon stocks.

The Southern Regional Fisheries Board has submitted a development programme for the River Barrow aimed at developing this valuable natural resource to its full potential and this programme will be considered for funding under the Inland Fisheries element of the National Development Plan (1994-1999).

In addition increased protection at sea and greatly increased anti pollution measures in recent years should contribute to the development of the stocks of salmon in the river. This year I understand the Southern Regional Fisheries Board plan to stock the river system with more than 100,000 salmon fry.
