Vol. 431 No. 5

Written Answers. - Energy Policy.

Pat Cox

Ceist:

20 Mr. Cox asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if, in so far as it relates to environmental policy, he will reject the suggestion in the Green 2000 report that, in the context of EC studies on the long term structure of the energy supply sector which consider the need to minimise environmental impacts and gaseous emissions including CO2, the role of nuclear power must inevitably be re-examined.

Avril Doyle

Ceist:

31 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications his views on the statement on page 166 of the Green 2000 report that the role of nuclear power must inevitably be re-examined; and if such a re-examination is Government policy.

I propose taking Question Nos. 20 and 31 together.

Energy policy in continually being re-examined and refined to take account of changing national requirements and priorities and developments in energy technology. However, the Government will continue to be firmly opposed to the increased use of nuclear power generally as long as current concerns in relation to safety, waste disposal and decommissioning are not satisfactorily resolved. In addition the current state of nuclear technology and economic costs make it unsuitable for the relatively small scale stand alone electricity system operated in Ireland.
