Vol. 432 No. 7

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy John Bruton.

I seek your permission, Sir, under Standing Order 30 to adjourn the Dáil to have the Government clarify a statement made by the Taoiseach on the Order of Business on 25 May, column 673 of the Official Report, that the Tánaiste was truly reflecting the Programme for Government when he stated there would be no further disposal of State assets in the lifetime of this Government. In light of the Government's reported statement at last night's meeting with Aer Lingus that the judicious disposal of assets is an intrinsic element of the strategy for survival and the imminent discussions here on the Transport Estimates next week, it is urgent and important for the House to know if these statements of policy on the part of the Tánaiste are accurate. If the policy is to be changed this should be done openly in the Dáil and not elsewhere.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order. Accordingly, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
