Vol. 432 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mutton Island (Galway) Sewerage Works.

Robert Molloy

Ceist:

24 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment his views on the effect of sewerage effluent discharge from the proposed Mutton Island Treatment Works, County Galway, on the shellfish in Galway Bay; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I recently determined that, subject to a number of modifications, the proposal, by Galway Corporation for a sewage treatment plant and outfall at Mutton Island will embody the best practicable means to prevent or limit significant adverse effect on the environment.

The potential impact of this proposal on shell fisheries in Galway Bay was comprehensively addressed in the relevant environmental impact statement. This concluded that in no case would a deterioration in shellfish water quality result and that, in most cases, this quality would be improved. None of the submissions or observations made to me in connection with the EIS disclosed concern about shellfish water quality. I am satisfied that the Mutton Island proposal will bring important environmental improvements in this and other respects.
