Vol. 432 No. 7

Written Answers. - EC Road Safety Programme.

Liz O'Donnell

Ceist:

31 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to give effect to the newly launched European Commission programme on road safety; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The report of a high level group on road safety matters was presented to the EC Transport Council in December 1992. The report did not identify specific measures to be pursued at EC level but set out criteria for ranking measures in order of priority, identified priority fields of action and commented on the means required to implement a programme.

In March 1993, a Commission communication entitled The Future Development of the Common Transport Policy indicated that a road safety programme will be presented. The multi-dimensional approach which is a feature of the communication is already reflected in the road safety campaign which has been pursued in this country in the past three years. That campaign has seen a reduction in road deaths of nearly 7 per cent in each of the past 2 years.
