Vol. 432 No. 8

Written Answers. - Motor Insurance Premia Statistics.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

82 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the total amount of motor insurance premia paid to insurance companies in each of the years 1980, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1990; and the total amount paid out by insurance companies on claims in the same years.

The information sought by the Deputy is set out in the following table. As the Deputy may be aware this information is also available. in the Insurance Annual Report [Blue Book], published by my Department.

The Department will of course appreciate that claims paid in any one year do not reflect the total cost of claims as provision must also be made for claims that are incurred in that year but which do not fall due to be paid until subsequent years. Therefore, I have also set out in the table the total cost of claims incurred for each of the years in question.
