Vol. 433 No. 1

Written Answers. - Offaly Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Pat Gallagher

Ceist:

177 Mr. P. Gallagher (Laoighis-Offaly) asked the Minister for the Environment the progress made on the Clara regional and Ferbane/Belmont water supply scheme and the Banagher, Ferbane and Clara sewerage schemes, in County Offaly; and when he envisages that the work on each will proceed.

The position in relation to the individual schemes is as follows. Having regard to the existing level of commitments under the Water and Sanitary Services Programme, I am not in a position to indicate when a decision may be made on the schemes concerned.

Clara Regional Water Supply Scheme including the Ferbane/Belmont areas

Tenders are under consideration in my Department.

Banagher Sewerage Scheme

The tender for the site investigation is under consideration in my Department.

Ferbane Sewerage Scheme

The contract documents are awaited from the county council.

Clara Sewerage Scheme
A preliminary report was submitted to my Department in 1982. The council, in the interim, carried out monitoring of the effluent and river water quality and were requested in June 1989 to indicate any modifications which they proposed in relation to the report. A response is awaited from the council.

Ceist:

178 Mr. P. Gallagher (Laoighis-Offaly) asked the Minister for the Environment the reason for the delay in sanctioning the group water scheme for Tinnycross, Tullamore, County Offaly; the steps, if any, he will take to overcome these delays; and when he will be in a position to sanction the necessary funding for this scheme.

My Department has requested the group to re-examine the design data and peak water demands for this scheme, in consultation with Offaly County Council, with a view to reducing the cost of the distribution system. It is not possible at this stage to indicate when the scheme may be approved.
