Vol. 433 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

283 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education the pupil/teacher ratio which exists at primary and post primary schools in this country; if she will give comparative figures for the UK and France; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The pupil-teacher ratio in first and second level schools, having regard to total enrolment and the total number of teachers, is approximately 25:1 and 17.4:1, respectively.

Up to date details of the position in the United Kingdom and France are not readily available. However, the latest available details published by the OECD indicated that the pupil teacher ratio at primary level in the UK and France was 21.4:1 and 17:1, respectively, while at second level the ratio was 16.5:1 and 13.4:1, respectively.
