121 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement on the statistics as regards the number of bank accounts referred to on page 22 of the Irish Bankers Federation Yearbook 1993 as against the often quoted suggestion that there are 15 million bank accounts in Irish banks.
The figure quoted for the number of bank accounts in the Irish Bankers Federation Yearbook 1993 relates only to bank accounts held in those banks which are members of the Irish Bankers Federation. Their figures do not include deposit accounts held in other financial institutions such as An Post, the ACC or the building societies etc.
The figure of 15 million bank accounts is the approximate number of deposit accounts held in all financial institutions.
