Vol. 433 No. 3

Written Answers. - International Science and Technology Park.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

40 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if his attention has been drawn to the potential of an international science and technology park development in the Dublin area; if he supports such a development; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that a study with EC support, into the establishment of a science park in Dublin is under way.

I understand this initiative was taken by a partnership of the three Dublin Universities, the Dublin Institute of Technology, Dublin Corporation, the IDA, the Dublin Business Innovation Centre and Dublin Chamber of Commerce.
I look forward to receiving the study when it is completed, and will consider its proposals carefully.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

41 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment the Government's plans to reduce emissions of methane, Chlorofleurocarbons, nitrous oxide and other gases which have been linked to climate change.

I refer to the recently published document "Ireland, Climate Change, CO2 Abatement Strategy", a copy of which is in the Oireachtas Library. In line with EC policy, the strategy is concerned primarily with CO2, the principal greenhouse gas. An inventory of methane emissions will also be prepared under the strategy. CFC emissions will, of course, be substantially reduced by reason of the operation of the UN Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer, to which Ireland is a party. In reviewing the national strategy, account will be taken of the contribution of various emissions to the greenhouse effect and the possibilities which exist for limiting such emissions.
