Vol. 434 No. 2

Written Answers. - Road Freight Carriers' Licences.

Michael Noonan

Ceist:

327 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the number of haulage licences which have been issued in each of the years from 1989 to 1992, inclusive, and in 1993 to date; and the policy, if any, he has on the number of such licences issued.

The following numbers of Road Freight Carrier's Licences have been issued in the years in question:

Year

Number

1989

738

1990

974

1991

716

1992

643

1-1-93 — 30-9-93

943

Road Freight Carrier's Licences are issued on a qualitative basis in accordance with the terms of the Road Transport Act, 1986, and the European Communities (Merchandise Road Transport) Regulations, 1991 and are valid for a period of three years. Because of the qualitative criteria required for eligibility for a licence, there are no restrictions on the number of licences that may be issued.
